In this post, I will show you how to fix the WordPress permalink 404 error.

How Does The Error Look Like?

Usually your whole website is returning the 404 error except the admin page; you can still access your admin page. When you get this error, don’t panic because there is always a way to fix.

There are several reasons the issue is occurring. Most commonly you get this error after upgrading WordPress or plugins. Also sometimes it happens after you made some changes on one of your theme files especially functions.php.

If you get this error, follow the steps below to narrow down and fix the issue.

How To Fix The WordPress Permalink 404

1. Simply Updating Permalinks

First of all, this is the easiest way you can try, and also most of  the time your 404 error could be fixed by this simple way.

Go to Settings > Permalinks and click the “Save Changes”, that’s it. What it does is to update the permalink settings and flush rewrite rules.

2. Updating .htaccess

If above doesn’t work, you can try updating .htaccess file manually. On the Permalinks page, choose Default and save. Go to your site and see if it works. If it works, there is a problem with the rewrite rules saved in your database and .htaccess.

To fix this, login to your server using FTP and remove the .htaccess file. Go back to the Permalinks page, choose the settings you want and save. It will automatically create new .htaccess.

If it doesn’t create the .htaccess file automatically, you will need to create it manually and upload to your server. Check out this article for more details about creating the .htaccess file.

3. Checking Plugins

If updating the .htaccess file doesn’t help, you can try the following step. This step is a bit of pain but it’s worth a try.

Try deactivating all of the plugins and remove the .htaccess file. Go to the Permalinks page and change it to Default option. Check if your site is back. If so, enable the plugins one by one and narrow down which plugin is causing this issue.

Once found the problematic plugin, let the plugin developer know that you have got the WordPress permalink 404 error with the plugin.

4. Checking register_taxonomy Value

If three of the solutions above didn’t work, check if you have given an empty slug value to rewrite for “register_taxonomy”. This is not common but I do see sometimes developers get the 404 error because of this.

I have discussed about how to improve SEO in the last post and understanding the keyword match types will greatly help you choose the right keywords.

In this post, I will explain the 3 different types of keyword match types plus one more important concept, PBR, and  show you which match type to use. I will use coffee shop as an example throughout this post.

Let’s start with the broad match first.

Broad Match

Broad match contains all the words in any order along with other terms.  Also synonyms, related searches will be included plus misspelling. “coffee shop” as an example may be:

• coffee shop
• coffee shop sydney
• coffee sydney shop
• sydney shop making coffee
• and possibly, flatwhite shop in sydney (“flatwhite” would not be a match for “coffee shop” because the word “coffee” isn’t present. But Google would ‘know’ that flatwhite is related to coffee, because it would see the two appearing close together in many places on the web.)

So when someone searches for those phrases above, your web pages optimized for coffee shop will appear.

As you can see, broad match would give you all the possible variations and the highest number of searches. However what this means is that it would also include “coffee shop franchise”, “shop selling coffee beans in sydney” etc which wouldn’t directly be related to what you are focusing on your website. You don’t want to waste your time and money on any searches which are not relevant to you so you need to find keywords with more accurate numbers for what you are targeting.

Phrase Match

Phrase match contains all the words in the exact order along with other words before and after the phrase. “coffee shop” as an example may be:

• coffee shop
• coffee shop sydney
• sydney coffee shop

It provides much more accurate numbers than broad match however it would still give you unrelated searches such as “sydney coffee shop franchise” if you are targeting selling coffee.

To get the most accurate number of searches for the terms you are targeting, you need to look at exact match.

Exact Match

Exact match contains only the phrase in the exact order. “coffee shop” as an example will be:

• coffee shop

It provides the most accurate number of searches and most of the time, it has the lowest search volume.

PBR (Phrase to Broad)

According to Market Samurai Glossary, PBR is:

Phrase-to-Broad Ratio – The percentage of phrase-match searches out of broad-match searches for this keyword. Low values indicate there may be other word orderings which are being searched for more.

To get the PBR, you need to divide the phrase searches by the broad searches. “coffee shop sydney” as an example, there are 6,600 broad match and 260 phrase match. To get the PBR ratio of “coffee shop sydney”, the calculation would be 260/6600 = 0.04 which means 4%.

So what would 4% mean? It would mean 4 people out of 100 are actually searching for “coffee shop sydney”. As you can guess, the higher the PBR value the better because it would indicate that there are more people are searching for the phrase in that specific order.

Here is another example. Let’s search for “fine dining sydney” on the Google Australia (.com.au) and here is the data received from Market Samurai.

“fine dining sydney” has 34% PBR which means 34 people out of 100 will search for the specific phrase. “sydney fine dining” has 11% PBR which is lower than “fine dining sydney”. This means more people are searching for “fine dining sydney” rather than “sydney fine dining” on Google Australia. Moreover, there are no PBR as well as searches available for the other variations because those phrases do not make sense in English and no one will actually search for those phrase on Google Australia.

So with the example above, it indicates that “fine dining sydney” is the best phrase to target when we look at PBR; of course we need to consider other factors such as the competitiveness but in this section, let’s just focus on PBR.

There is no exact answer for what % of PBR is the acceptable minimum number, but generally it is recommended to be at least above 15%. It is depending on your own experience. My preference is to give much tougher number saying above 65%.

However, you need to remember that PBR should not be considered as the only formula you need to consider when you choose keywords.

So Which One To Use?

Now we have better ideas of the difference between broad, phrase and exact match type; plus what is PBR and how it can help us decide the keywords. So which match type do you need to use?

I recommend to look at the exact match volume when you do the keyword research because it provides the most accurate numbers without any redundant data included. Furthermore, I only select the keywords with at least 100 monthly searches in exact match (but depending on your market, sometimes you may need to lower the minimum volume).

But besides the exact match search volume, I also look at the PBR ratio to support my research. If the phrase has higher PBR ratio, I am more confident with the keyword.

Overall, I would recommend you to look at the exact match volume with the PBR ratio to support your decision.

Google Analytics – Exclude IP Addresses

By default, Google analytics tracks all of the traffic including your own visits. To measure more accurate data, you may want to exclude your own visits to the website. If you have only one IP address, then it may not affect too much to your data, however just imagine if your company has 10 different IP address, it can affect quite significantly to the data.

In this post, I will show you how you can exclude the IP address(es) so that more accurate data will be collected.

How to Exclude Single IP

If you want to exclude a single IP address, follow the steps below.

1. Click the Admin button at the top right and a profile name you want to update.
2. Click the Filters tab and the “New Filter” button.
3. Add “Exclude Single IP” in the “Filter Name”.
4. Select the “Predefined Filter” for the “Filter Type”.
5. Choose “Exclude”, “traffic from the IP addresses” and “that are equal to”.
6. Click here to check your IP address and add your IP address in the text box.
7. Click the “Save” button.

Now your visits from the specific IP address you added above won’t be tracked from now on.

How to Exclude Multiple IP

Before showing you how to exclude the multiple IP addresses, let me give you an example. If your company uses a range of IP addresses, for instance:

198.134.21.1

198.134.21.2

198.134.21.3

…

198.134.21.16

then you need to use a RegEx (Regular expression to exclude the range of IP addresses. For the above example, you need to use ^198\.134\.21\.([1-9]|1[0-6])$

If you are not familiar with the RegEx, you can create the RegEx using this IP address range tool to generate the code above. As you can see from the screenshot below, to generate the RegEx code, add the first IP address and the last IP address and click the “Generate RegEx” button.

To exclude the range of IP addresses, follow the steps below.

From the step 1 to 2 is the same as above.

3. Add “Exclude Multiple IPs” in the “Filter Name”.
4. Select “Custom filter” for the “Filter Type”.
5. Choose “Exclude” and “IP Address” for the “Filter Field”.
6. In the “Filter Pattern”, add the regex you have created.
7. Choose “No” for the “Case Sensitive”.
8. Click the “Save” button.

And here are some questions I have helped people resolve this issue from the WordPress support forum.

• [resolved] Parse error…Help. I can’t log on to the site to change
• Fatal Error – Really not sure how I did this.
• [resolved] I can’t log into my site.

In this post, I will explain why this happens and how you can fix this.

Why WordPress Fatal Error Happens?

Most of the time this issue is caused by one of your plugins; it could be because

• the plugin is using an old function which is no longer supported by WordPress
• the plugin contains a function which does not exist

This usually happens after upgrading WordPress or the plugin itself.

When you get this error, the biggest problem is you cannot access your site, even the dashboard. Basically you can do nothing to fix this on your browser.

But don’t panic, it’s actually very simple to fix. Just follow the simple steps below.

How To Fix?

To fix WordPress Fatal error, what you need to do is to deactivate the problematic plugin. But as I have already mentioned, you cannot even access your dashboard. So how can we deactivate the plugin? You can do it on your cPanel (or through FTP). I will show you how you can deactivate the plugin on your cPanel.

1. Login to your cPanel and search for “File Manager”.
   
2. Go to public_html > wp-content > plugins folder.
3. In the plugins folder, find the problematic plugin folder, “contact-form-7-phone-mask-module” as the above example.
4. rename it to something else, “contact-form-7-phone-mask-module_OLD”.
5. Go to your website.

Once you rename the plugin folder name to something else and go to your website, the plugin will be automatically deactivated and your website should be live again.

WordPress and plugin developers constantly update their scripts to improve not only their functionalities but also security. So always keep your WordPress and plugins up-to-date. If you do not use certain plugins, I recommend to remove them.
